Five actors who can read me the phone book

   Posted by: Gemini   in Movies

We’re sidetracking a bit today to participate in this perfectly themed “Top 5″ group writing project from Problogger. Since I have a thing for good voices, this works for me.

In the end, no matter how good the packaging is, no matter how wonderful the music and the cinematography of the film or show, if you don’t have the right actors it’s no good. And the right actors have to have the right voices. So today I bring to you the five people in show business who I think have some of the greatest voices - beginning with number five.

5. Tim Curry – If you’ve been on the site for any amount of time you’ll note that I’ve always thought Curry has a wonderful voice. Given that nine times out of ten you hear him without seeing him – Darkness from Legend for example, I would have to think I’m not the only one who enjoys listening to him.

4. Kathleen Turner – Okay, male or female, you have to admit that this woman’s voice drips seduction. Don’t believe me, try watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit again and tell me otherwise.

3. Susan Sarandon – Perhaps one of the most recognizable feminine voices in the acting community, the rasp of her voice is oddly comforting. She is one of the few actresses in the business that can actually embrace good and evil with her voice. A quality shared with Curry.

2. Vin Diesel – Undoubtedly the male counterpart to Kathleen Turner. Despite the fact that you usually hear him in cheesy racing movies or see in at the firing end of a weapon, he has this voice that just washes over you like honey.

1. Morgan Freeman – Anyone who knows me would know he caps my list. The charm that oozes from his voice just made watching millions of penguins all the more fascinating, and I like penguins to begin with. There is nothing this man can’t say and not have people commenting on his voice. He can read me the phone book and anything else he wants to.

So, there you have it my favorite voices in Hollywood. Agree? Disagree? Feel free to add anyone you like in the comments.

I’ve never thought of Vin Diesel as having a great voice because I’m usually thinking “Wow, he’s good looking’, but your right. I’d have to add James Earl Jones

Sarakastic, I was looking over this this morning and realized I had missed James Earl Jones right before I started banging my head on the desk. :D

Haha, I love the angle you took with this article. It certainly stands out from most of the articles that participated so far. And I wholeheartedly agree with you on Morgan Freeman, he has the most awesome voice ever. I guess his role in War of the Worlds highlights this as well, seeing how he only talked there (even if it was just for a short while).

I would also add James Earl Jones, magnificent voice that he has. I’ve never thought of Vin Diesel as high ranking in any category, guess I’m not a fan. :)

Good luck in the Problogger project, it’s fun, isn’t it?

Hmm…who would I like to have read me the phone book…I guess it depends…would it be in person, or on the telephone? And would they be rubbing my feet and feeding me chocolates? If it’s on the phone, I’d have to say the Geico gekko - I love that Australian accent, but I don’t know that I’d want him to sit next to me.

In any event, I’d say my pick is Sean Connery.

Interesting picks (and good post title). I would have never thought to pick out Vin Diesel, but I’d have to agree. I also agree 100% with Morgan Freeman, Sean Connery & of course James Earl Jones.

Also I’d give points to:

Lee Ermey (Drill instructor in “Full Metal Jacket”)
John Wayne
John Travolta
Nicholas Cage
Jimmy Stewart
Dustin Hoffman
Actor who played the King in the movie “Kingdom of Heaven” (very focused and in-the-moment, Marlon Brando-like).

…there’s so many more.

James Earl Jones is definitely an all time favorite.
He’s not living anymore, but the all time best voice has to be Orson Welles.
Another current favorite is Nicole Kidman. I know, try to forget about her looks for a second. She is great with accents.

Wow! Thanks for all the feedback. I would have never even thought of some of those actors for voices. May need to expand on this in the future.

William Shatner would be on my list.

Great list! Gets you thinking…

The one and only man with THE voice that could read me anything he wanted would be Mike Rowe. He’s the host of The Discovery Channel’s show, Dirty Jobs. He also narrates several shows including, Deadliest Catch.

Thanks for the opportunity! Love your post.

Hi
Nice post
I can’t say that I have consciously ever concentrated on actors/actresses voices before. I’ll have to give it a try.

Thanks
Tom

I’ll have to bump your Vin Diesel and replace him Kiefer Sutherland and his “velvet-wrapped brick” of a voice. Reading me bedtime stories. In French. (Hey, he’s a bi-lingual Canadian. It could happen.)

Very nice! I am the writer of “Top 5 things to do in Istanbul” This was my first group activity, but i liked it very much.
http://meeting-continents.blogspot.com/2007/05/top-5-things-to-do-in-istanbul.html

Have you ever been to Istanbul which links east to west, and west to east like a weblink. Istanbul played such a critical role in the world politics and culture throughout the history.

Now i have a dream i would like to share with you and Darren Rowse. All the Probloggers should meet at Istanbul and join the 29th edition of the Eurasia Marathon on Sunday 28th of October, 2007.

Let’s meet where the continents meet : As the Istanbul Eurasia Marathon starts from the Anatolian side while taking the runners to the most beautiful spots of town, signing its name under a touristic attraction as well. The Bosphorus is one of the most beautiful spots on the world and as you run through it, history of the centuries run with you on the streets.

I joined the 28th Intercontinental Istanbul EurAsia Marathon on 5th of November, 2006 together with my friends, Joe and Suat San. We enjoyed the wonderful Bosphorus, and beautiful streets of Istanbul on a cold but sunny Sunday morning. The slogan for last year’s marathon was “let’s run for a non-smoking world”.

this was my blog post for last year’s marathon:
http://meeting-continents.blogspot.com/2006/12/intercontinental-eurasia-marathon.html

I would be happy to invite you to the 29th Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon, the only marathon to run between two continents - Europe and Asia. Istanbul is one of the oldest settlements on the world. What about participating in the 29th EurAsia Marathon in 2007 which takes place in the most beautiful places of a wonderful city that has been the capital of three empires ?

You may find details about the marathon here:
http://www.istanbulmarathon.org/english/main.asp

Please let me know if you are interested.

Have a nice day!
Mert

As a Rocky Horror fan, I could never say anything against Tim Curry or Susan Sarandon. I’ve loved them both since my first viewing.

I was fortunate enough to see Tim (I wonder if he knows we’re on a first-name-basis)at the Roxy in Hollywood a number of years ago, and hearing him in person is even more hypnotic than on film. My favorite voice over - he was Hexxus in FernGully, and he was simply delicious.

Thanks for the great “top 5.”

Richard Harris had one awesome voice, also Yul Brenner. Anything they read now would be haunting though.
