Now that I have your attention, the above is a lie. Except while lingering in the world of JC Hutchins’ podcast novel Descent, book one of the 7th Son trilogy. That line opens the first chapter of the book and drags you in for the ride.
While Descent has been out in the podisphere for some time now, I’ve only recently finished listening to it. It’s a very difficult novel to multitask to, which is why it’s taken me so long to finish just this one podcast.
Descent pulls you out of your chair and slaps you face first into a world the life you’ve lived and the person you are is not what you think. You are one of seven, an experiment, created by the government and then recalled by the same people to correct a mistake. What you learn is something so great you can’t wrap your mind around it, though the evidence surrounds you and you can no longer separate truth from lie. This is what you get to deal with in a span of 48 hours after you awoke on a Saturday.
Disjointed as that might sound, I really can’t give you anything else or you lose the complete impact of the story. JC Hutchins has created a story so amazing, and so full of conspiracy, that you have to stop yourself from wondering if he’s really got more information that he’s letting on. His grasp of technology during the weaving of this book almost puts Michael Crichton to shame.
If his nemesis, Scott Sigler, is the next Stephen King, then Crichton better watch his back because JC could easily overtake him, especially if the rest of the trilogy is as good as Descent.
Now then, I need to get through the other two books, as JC will be in Austin this weekend. God willing I’ll get a chance to meet him, and I will have finished 7th Son before hand.
