A is for Anne

Posted by: Gemini   in Books, Entertainment ABCs, Movies, Music

Anne strikes me as a name synonymous with entertainment - actresses, writers, musicians, and more.  Through the decades there seems to have always been a woman named Anne providing entertainment.  Hellfire, just go back the 1500’s and you have Anne Boleyn, she may not have been an actress or entertainer per se, but she certainly entertained the Tudor Court by refusing to give into Henry VIII until a proposal of marriage was given.  More so, the entertainment at her expense with her trial for treason and subsequent beheading.

Today, however, we’re focusing on an actress, two authors and - with a slight deviation of the name - a singer.

Anne Hathaway made her mark in Disney’s “The Princess Diaries” films.  Under the guidance of Garry Marshall for the first film he is said to have likened her to “a combination Julia Roberts, Audrey Hepburn and Judy Garland.”  She is certainly as versatile as the three actresses, going from family films for the House of Mouse to a role in the controversial film Brokeback Mountain.  At 26 she has acted along side Julie Andrews, Meryl Streep, Maggie Smith, James McAvoy and the late Heath Ledger to massive success.  Anne has shown growth and versatility in her roles the like of which will continue her launch into stardom and make her a memorable actress for years to come.  Currently she is staring with Get Smart with Steven Carell, Dwayne Johnson and Alan Arkin.

Anne Rice is, without doubt, a legendary writer, even if half her fan base abandoned her when she came out with Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt.  Having been one of her fans for years, I lived out the days of Lestat de Lioncourt , had all the books, watched the movies and like many desperately wanted to strangle the people who ruined two of Anne’s books to make Queen of the Damned.  But, that digresses from discussing Anne Rice. She has always created memorable characters and stories, its rare for someone not to know who Lestat, Louis, Claudia and Armand are, but the Vampire Chronicles were a gateway series into her better books.  While I am not the avid fan I was, I still keep on hand three of, what I consider, her best books – Cry to Heaven, The Mummy (Ramses the Damned) and The Witching Hour.  I confess to have outgrown the Vampire Chronicles at the turn of the century, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t recommend them to people who enjoy vampire stories, as they are still some of the best.

Remaining in the realm of writers I bring back into the light a name familiar to people who have been with the site for some time – Anne Bishop.  She is the author behind the Black Jewels Trilogy (Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, Queen of the Darkness), three of the best books I’ve ever read.  She spins worlds that turn your expectations on their heads and only gets better with each book published.  Her fan base grows by leaps and bounds to the point that I actually saw some cos-playing at last year’s DragonCon.  There are currently six books in the realms of the Black Jewels with more coming out each year.  Additionally she has a series called The World of the Fae that delves into the connection of earthly bound witches and the Fae; how they must work together to survive.  There is also the duology The Landscapes of Ephemera where a incubus and his cousin must save the world from a living nightmare.  Anne Bishop is the first name that springs forth from my lips when someone asks for a recommendation in novelists.

Finally we deviate a touch from Anne by adding a letter, in which you’ll get Annie.  Now the Annie I’m speaking of in particular is Annie Lennox, perhaps best known as being part of the Eurythmics, I think everyone has heard Sweet Dreams are Made of This.  Annie is a solo artist now, having come out with songs like Walking on Broken Glass and Into the West.  The later of which she received the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2004 for.  She has received a number of other musical awards over the years she’s been performing and is not only an outstanding musician but humanitarian as well.  If you haven’t heard of her, I recommend this and this.  I think you’ll enjoy them.

There are many more Anne’s in the world of entertainment.  Another that springs to mind is Anne McCaffrey, and while I can’t personally recommend her, Jenn has been singing her praises for the Dragonriders of Pern, along with other books, for years.  While I’ve had many people urge me to read more of McCaffrey’s books I’m afraid to confess that I see more of my eyelids than I do the novels.  But don’t let my reaction to them spoil your chance at reading highly acclaimed novels.  Last I heard she would be attending DragonCon this fall and if you’re a fan I would recommend trying to get there, she doesn’t leave Ireland often.

Did I miss your favorite Anne or variation there of?  Share your favorites in the comments.

The fastest, Non-Spoileriest X-Files review EVAR

   Posted by: FlippantMoniker   in Movies

I watched it Friday at the Alamo Drafthouse.. and.. it was fun. it was nothing like what I’d expected / hoped for..(having seen every single X-Files episode evar).. but that is sometimes a nice thing for me, so I’m happy with the experience.

No, it was not just one long episode.. the structure is a little different (though the formula is as strong as evar (blegh)) The characters are a bit more mature, and have lives outside each other (unless you count the sehks).. and .. they aren’t FBI (they are just consulting).

Yes, it does FEEL like X-files.. up until the very end.. there is a twist that I noticed, which amused me, but.. yeah.. it’s pretty damn atypical..

No, it is not an offensive twist at the end, but it IS somewhat surprising.. In a kinda.. Hmm.. Weird.. sort of a way.

It is worth seeing, but pay VERY close attention to the fine details for some easter eggs. I.E. Read Fox’s Cell-Phone display! Read it! Read it!

If you LOVE the creepy scaryness of the X-files…. You might hate it.. If you HATE the romance and drama… you might hate it…

The ONE (well, two maybe) spoiler: (to protect some of you) is behind the cut..

Around the Podiosphere 7/30/2008

   Posted by: Gemini   in Podcasting

Interviews, interview, interviews.  Double Trouble is kicking it hardcore around the podiosphere with interviews everywhere.  They’ve can be heard on Creative Adventures, UltraCreatives, ScreenGeeks, Erk Pod, and Friday Night Live with Monty (please note some of these may ask you to download the interview).  And I’m still trying to catch up with the earlier interviews.  Eeek!  Whether or not you choose to check out the interviews you can still check out the PDFs of Digital Magic by Philippa Ballantine and The Case of the Pitcher’s Pendant: A Billibub Baddings Mystery by Tee Morris and pick up your copies of both on August 8, 2008 on Amazon.com at 8 AM PST.

Speaking of Philippa Ballantine she released Chasing the Bard Chapter 19 into the wild earlier this week.  For those of you who don’t know, this is the prequel to Digital Magic.  Chasing the Bard is a great story and there’s an excellent cast involved, I hope you’ll take a listen.

Have you tuned into Krakens Quest yet?  Poor Tee Morris is being led by the nose by his stolen jersey and this week the Kraken thief even made him eat snails, or French Sushi as Tee called it.  Poor man, I hope he gets his jersey back at DragonCon.

Indiana Jim e-mailed me something most excellent!  On August 30th he is premiering a Star Wars Audio Drama called Codename Starkeeper.  You can find all the details here, including an awesome cast listing.  Considering I enjoy Jim’s work and I see the name Corran Horn in the character list, you can count on me tuning in.

Metamor City – Making the Cut is on hiatus for a bit.  Chris Lester has been spending the week crossing the country to California.  And it suddenly occurs to me that Chris, Scott Sigler and Seth Harwood are going to be relatively close in proximity of one another…for some reason this terrifies me.  My terrors aside you can check out Episode 23 while I take advantage of this pause and get caught up.

JC Hutchins release Obsidian 19 this week.  I haven’t dug into it just yet, but you can expect lots of goodness from the Obsidian world coming up in reviews this Friday.  It’s making me sad that this experiment in podcasting will be coming to an end next month and I’m anxious to see what JC has up his sleeve next.

Edward G. Talbot tells me that the second part of New World Orders is beginning this week.  I know Nick has turned into this one and I’ve got some serious catch up to do.  I’m hearing everywhere how excellent this story is.

If you haven’t seen the news from the FDO Scott Sigler then it behooves me to tell you there’s a delay on Nocturnal.  Scott is dealing with some serious family issues. His last blog entry said he would be home tomorrow and would try to give us an update. I want only to say that our prayers, thoughts and good wishes are with him and his family and remind him that his fans will be waiting when things are calm enough for him to return to the podcasting.

That’s what I have this week.  If you’d like to be included you can DM me on Twitter or send me the details about your podcast and what you have upcoming or have released via e-mail to reviews@timeww.com.  Until next week, remember, if you’re going to waste time, waste it well.

Food Detectives

   Posted by: Gemini   in TV

I got lucky Sunday night and caught a Sneak Peek of Food Network’s new series Food Detectives.  Your host is Ted Allen, whom you might remember from Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.  Given he was always my favorite of the guys, to say I was interested in the show would be an understatement, and seeing it tacked on to the end of The Next Food Network Star made me happy.

What is Food Detectives?  Think of it as Mythbusters for foodies.  They take everyday food thoughts, like the “Five Second Rule” and explore them through trial, error and science.  Sunday night they covered the aforementioned Five Second Rule, Capsaicin Relief, the Negative Calorie Effect of Celery, and Refrigerator Odor Elimination through Baking Soda.  The show is a delightful mix of food education and fact while debunking food myth.

To test some of these items they tortured Food Techs.  Made these five people eat a salsa made from Habanero peppers then test various methods of dealing with the resulting heat pain in their mouths.  I truly felt sorry for these folks, but was laughing my ass off at the same time as they chugged water, soda, beer, milk and ate bread.  The expressions on their faces were priceless, particularly since I know I’ve made that face before.

Food Detectives premieres tonight (Tuesday July 29th) on Food Network at 9 pm Eastern.  It’s quick and quick witted; only 30 minutes long and something I can see devoting myself to.  Being a bit of a foodie myself it was fun to learn things about these food myths that are out there.

And what did we learn on Sunday’s episode?  Well, I can’t tell you that now can I, it would spoil the fun of the show.  Let’s just say that I’m off to the pet store to pick up some activated charcoal and call it good.  I hope all the foodie readers will tune in and share their thoughts on Food Detectives with us.

Doctor HUH?!

   Posted by: FlippantMoniker   in TV

Okay, so, when I was a wee little dragonling living in Germany with my family on an US AFB.. We used to watch Doctor Who.. the Tom Baker ones.. I loved them.  Always have, and would watch as much Dr. Who as I possibly could.  Well, needless to say, I nearly crapped myself when I say that they’d started up a new series, and it was airing on SciFi!

Well, it became my life’s ambition to watch every single Dr. Who episode.. EVER MADE!

Enter NetFlix.  I have, like 180 movies in my queue.. and about half of those are Dr. Who.  I just got done watching DVD 1 of a collection from the ancient, ancient, first doctor series: Dr. Who, The Beginning, (starring William Hartnell as the first Doctor) which I thought would be SUPER cheasy and dumb, but fun.  Actually, it was freakin’ awesome!

Every dang shot is composed, balanced, framed and executed with loving care and an artistic eye.  I was glued to the TV.  Watched every episode through in one sitting and am crying tears of blood that I have to wait for the next DVD.  It’s no wonder that this show is such a freakin’ phenomenon!

It is black and white.  It’s a LOT of fun.  The acting is.. about.. maybe 90% not cheesy.. The plot is easy to follow, and pretty much everything we’d expect..  It’s just fun!  I lurved it, and can’t wait to see the REST of the series.

This Week’s Triva

Posted by: Gemini   in Movies, Trivia

Last week’s question asked:

Wise man say forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza” was coined in what film?

The answer was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Congratulations to everyone who answered correctly.

Your question this week is:

Which film did not feature a song PERFORMED by Queen?

1. Revenge of the Nerds
2. Flash Gordon
3. Moulin Rouge
4. Highlander

There’s your trivia dose for the week. Think you have the answer, leave it in the comments. Remember, just because IMdB is available doesn’t mean you should use it. :D  I’ll post the answer with next week’s question.

Whedon & King enter New Media

Posted by: Gemini   in Around the Interwebs

I had intended on writing about people like Joss Whedon (not a big fan) and Stephen King (major fan) entering the realm of new media when I’d woken up a bit more this morning. JC Hutchins, however, beat me to the punch, and did so more informatively and knowingly that I could have.

So, for now, I’m going to link you over to his article. I think you’ll find it as interesting as I did.  And I’ll return later with something of my own.

Squeee New Takeover! And MORE Stuff.

Posted by: Gemini   in Books, Podcasting

See, told you’d I’d be compelled to write again today.  The mighty birthday girl has released episode six of The Takeover.  Like I’ve said in the past, this is such an awesome series and I really hope you’re listening to it.

The downside is that there’s going to be a hiatus so that Mur can work on promoting Playing for Keeps.  I have a lot of penny scraping to do so I can get all these wonderful books coming out in August.  Then I have to figure out how to get them signed since I won’t be near anyplace to see these writers.  This is a total pout situation.  Stupid finances keeping me from DragonCon. :(

Okay, enough sulking.  You want something else really cool, than check this out.  JC has released a vidcast of his first non 7th Son fiction ever.  This is a video of Matthew Wayne Selznick reading the story that JC Hutchins wrote for Matthew’s Sovereign Era superhero universe.  The clip was taken from the massive reading that Matthew did on July 13, 2008 as people worked to advance his book Brave Men Run along the Amazon.com charts.

Which reminds me, that’s another book I need to scrape pennies for.  Ah well, I’ll get my greedy reviewing hands on it eventually.  Hellfire with all these podcasts and all this neat stuff who needs Comic-Con to begin with?  I’m off to listen to The Takeover.

Comic Con and Stuff

Posted by: Gemini   in Around the Interwebs, Books

Sorry folks, don’t have much for you today, been watching my entertainment feeds for SDCC news.  That’s San Diego Comic-Con by the way and I’m afraid some of the news has had me wanting to shut myself in the oven and breathe deep.

I do wish some people who are reporting these things would get it right…  what went from a Tron Remake last night became Tron 2 this morning.  And while I don’t think it was Comic-Con news there’s vicious rumors going around saying MTV Films is remaking the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

You’d think with all the brilliant books out there that deserve film treatment they could stop remaking movies.  At least the Barbarella remake is off, it’s been replaced with a Red Sonja remake.  ARGH!

I’m just going to point you to two of my favorite sites and let you wallow in the news yourself.  You can check out Cinematical for everything film and TV Squad for everything television.

I’ll likely have more than one update today as I go though podcasts and such or see some delectable/detestable tidbit from Comic-Con.

And now for something completely different…

A very happy birthday to Mur Lafferty!  You can give her a belated gift on August 25th buy picking up your copy of Playing for Keeps from Amazon.com.
