Going to get this out of the way now… I hate cliffhangers. Yes, it’s true to form for the 7th Son story cycles, and Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff certainly works true to form. You’re left cliffhangering in this episode and the first time I listened through it I missed the “Part One” that came after the title. It left me with a total WTF moment as the story wrapped up.
How did JC put it in the opening banter… “You might be a trained killer in a facility far beneath the Obsidian blackout but even here you’ll soon learn that when the power fails, chaos reigns.” Or something along those lines and that short description is spot on. Nemesis is just shy of being the edgiest of the Obsidian stories, and it may take that honor when part two is released.
Nemesis is definitely an engrossing story and gave me a new phrase this morning, about everything being Skittles and rainbows; which this story is not. From the opening commentary about punks and the news to the ending barb of figuring out what the Nemesis project is combined with the retard in the middle the story doesn’t lack punch. Or plot, or anything else for that matter and it will leave you with the WTF feeling I mentioned earlier as it comes to a sudden and grinding halt. Bloody cliffhangers.
I confess, I’ve listened to this story about four times and I’m still hearing things I missed the first time. Clocking in at about 40 minutes it’s not a short story but a genuine novella which leaves me longing for the second half. Nemesis is not a story for kids, so if you have them around grab the headphones, the language is very much not suited for “network television” – probably a good thing it’s not on TV then. It will keep you entertained and glued to the story, I think you’ll enjoy it.
I do know that after hearing Nemesis I need to tune in for more of Nemcoff’s work. At least subscribing to his stuff would make iTunes show that I have more than 666 various episodes waiting to be listened to.
Listen in, enjoy it, and remember it’s a two parter so don’t get caught by the cliffhanger like I did.
