The Bitterest Pill (Obsidian 15)

   Posted by: Gemini   in Podcasting

Dan Klass’ episode of Obsidian took us where we haven’t been yet.  Into the aftermath of the blackout.  He gives his reactions to both the blackout and the first days of the aftermath, when the power has been returned.  It’s a quiet, softly spoken, casual episode.  The twenty minutes that we spend listening to him passes swiftly and fascinatingly.

Dan sounds like he’s not so much reporting his thoughts the moment the lights come on, but more like he’s reading a journal that he’d written when the power blew.  He offers insight into the fight for survival without submitting to the violence himself.  He also gives an accurate and visual description of the LA area, discussing how it’s never been truly dark.  As Dan puts it “nothing means nothing.”

There’s no mincing of words or excessive use of them.  To hear him speak as though he lived through this makes the idea behind the Obsidian arc more real somehow.  There are people who survive natural disasters who go though this.  Then there’s the joy of having it all back, and the sense of longing that somehow you kind of wish it would all go away again.

Because of how it differs from the previous episodes, it needs a category all to itself.  Having done the “no power for a time” myself I can see where he’s coming from on this.  That alone made it worth listening to in my book and I hope you’ll do the same.

Stepping away from the review… Yes, you do hear the cup rattle for me and my family.  JC found out that things have been real difficult for my family while I was looking at joining one of his super secret projects.  He generously offered to give a shout out for me during one of the Obsidian casts and I gave it some serious thought before I said okay.  I cannot, ever, express how grateful I am for JC’s generosity in this matter.  No more than I can ever express my thanks to those of you who have, or may donate, or to those who have simply stopped by because of the praises that JC sang about the site.

I did not say anything on the site, though Flippant mentioned helping the blog out, because I don’t like asking for donations.  They are always welcome, but you’ll never see ME point out the donation button.  I will, however, like JC, always mention when someone else needs help.  Its just who I am.

So, again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
