So, NetFlix sent me Delicatessen last night, and I watched it.
A couple years back, the Alamo Drathouse was showing this flic as a special show, with a French menu and all that cool jazz. It’s got one of my favorite actors in it too: Dominique Pinon, so I was excited to see it. I really wanted to go, but.. they were all sold out. Woulda been kinda’ lonesome anyway, I think.. having no date or anything. Anyway..
So, NetFlix has it, and they sent it to me last night. Quick run down of the plot. MC is an ex-clown who’s come to this dilapidated apartment building to work as a handyman. It’s a dystopian world where there’s no food, but plenty of cannibalism. Our hero is intended to be the next beast on the butcher’s block.
The butcher (who’s also the landlord) has a daughter who falls in love with the clown and tries to save him.
Let’s just say ALL hell breaks loose by the end of the movie.
I wouldn’t say I was let down.. *thinks* Yeah, I wasn’t let down, but I wasn’t wowed out of my socks either ( I probably would have been in the theater though). The subtitles were acting up, so I lost some important dialogue, and the whole thing felt a little bit rushed.. like there was SO much plot and SO many characters they wanted to work with and didn’t have time..
I really do like the Non-U.S. intellect with which certain subjects are treated, though. It really makes certain elements of the plot a bit unpredictable. It’s just that EVERY line of the movie - every shot, every frame is SO DAMN important.. I feel like it should have been a miniseries.. Like I should have broken it up into 30 minute chunks to absorb it all!
Oh well.. that gives it some replay value.. though it’ll probably be quite some time till I watch this one again.
Overall, I lured it, but I wasn’t knocked on my butt. It’s a good view - watch it with a nice meal and candlelight.
