Yes, I know I’m out of order here. This one passed under my radar and its author, Jeff Sass e-mailed to see if we’d heard it. I’m very glad he did because it allowed me to find out that for some reason iTunes didn’t download this episode. Love Thy Neighbor was given its own episode of Voices from the Darkness and it’s worthy to have been one of the short shorts that have been featured in the Obsidian anthology thus far. This, as JC explains in the opening chatter, is why it has its own episode. I can’t rattle off what all Jeff has been involved with but it’s a lot and it’s impressive, and part of it involved TekWar. I always did like TekWar.
But back to his Obsidian short, Love Thy Neighbor. As I told him in an e-mail HOLY EFFING COW! This is probably one of the best pieces of short, short fiction that I’ve heard in a very long time. It goes through the antagonism that neighbors can feel toward one another, particularly when that neighbor has something going on that will drive you to madness.
Love Thy Neighbor describes the urban chaos of the blackout better than any of the others I’ve heard so far. This one is actually spooky, and more so because it fits into a less than ten minute time frame. Jeff throws you in feet first without a moment to catch your breath as he goes into the absolute loathing for a neighbor and what the results could be should something like this ever happen.
If you have ten minutes to spare, I definitely advise you go take a listen. You may need to take twenty and listen to it twice, I know I did, and I know I’m very happy I did so.
